2025 Distinguished Service Recipient - Carl Newton, OD

The Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians (OAOP) is proud to present the 2025 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Carl Newton in recognition of a lifetime of dedication to patients, advocacy, and the optometric profession.

Dr. Newton, a native of Waynoka, Oklahoma, has practiced for more than 40 years in Cherokee, where he provided trusted, personalized eye care to generations of families. He was a member of the first graduating class of Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry (NSUOCO) in 1983 and went on to build a thriving practice rooted in integrity, innovation, and compassion.

Beyond his work in the clinic, Dr. Newton has served the state as a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he has been a champion for rural health, education, and limited government. He played a key role in passing HB 1979—landmark legislation protecting patient choice and supporting independent optometric care in Oklahoma.

“Dr. Newton’s service to both his community and our profession is unmatched,” said OAOP Executive Director Joel Robison. “His career is a shining example of how optometrists can be leaders not just in medicine, but in public life.”

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Newton said, "It’s been an incredible privilege to serve both my patients and my community over these past four decades. I’m honored to be recognized by a profession and an association I care so deeply about."

The OAOP thanks Dr. Newton for a lifetime of leadership and service that continues to shape the future of eye care in Oklahoma.
