TAHLEQUAH --The Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians (OAOP) proudly announces that Dr. Nate Lighthizer has been honored as the 2025
Oklahoma Optometric Physician of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes Dr. L
ighthizer's outstanding contributions to patient care, education, and leadership within the field of optometry.
Dr. Lighthizer serves as the Dean of the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry (NSUOCO), where he also serves as a professor. He has been instrumental in advancing optometric education and clinical practice, both within Oklahoma and nationally.
A graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry, Dr. Lighthizer completed his residency at NSUOCO, specializing in ocular disease and laser procedures. He has since dedicated his career to enhancing optometric care through innovative teaching methods and by expanding the scope of practice for optometrists.
Under his leadership, NSUOCO has established the Dry Eye Clinic, addressing a common yet often overlooked condition affecting many patients. Dr. Lighthizer is also renowned for his extensive lecturing, having presented in 49 states and internationally, sharing his expertise on advanced optometric procedures.

In response to receiving the award, Dr. Lighthizer said, "This recognition is incredibly humbling. I’m fortunate to work alongside amazing colleagues and students every day, and to be part of a profession that continues to grow and evolve. Optometry has given me so much, and I’m committed to giving back—through teaching, mentorship, and ensuring our patients always receive the best care possible."
